New Jersey Senate Democrats are vowing to maintain pressure on the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to build a new Midtown Manhattan bus terminal within the next 10 years. In an editorial board meeting at The Record on Wednesday, state Sens. Loretta Weinberg and Bob Gordon said a new bus terminal is vital to the people and to the economy of the region.“It really affects the future economic viability of northern New Jersey,” Gordon said, citing a Regional Plan Association study that projected substantial job growth in Manhattan but little opportunity for housing.“If the state with the longest commutes in the country has commutes that are even more onerous … people are going to go elsewhere,” Gordon added. The current terminal already operates overcapacity and, because of structural problems, will need to be replaced in about 20 years.A new terminal, which is expected to be built one block west of the current location, will need to be … [Read more...] about N.J. senators demand billions more for PA bus terminal
The days of cheap gasoline officially came to an end in New Jersey Tuesday, as drivers began paying 23 cents more a gallon to pay for infrastructure and road repair.Drivers grumbled as they filled their cars, even as some accepted their fate.“It may indeed be one of those necessary evils,” said Michael Amoroso, 60, who took advantage of the last day for cheap gas by filling up his Chevrolet Tahoe at P.E.P. The year: 1927. STORY: N.J. bridge panel widens probe, issuing 18 subpoenas STORY: N.J., feds probe Port Authority chief's contractsGov. A. Harry Moore pushed for the bridge to be built with steel-wire cables, not metal bars, and that the cables come from the Roebling Co. in Trenton, ensuring new jobs and business for the state capital.Along the way, Moore convinced the Legislature to give him and future governors veto power so Trenton and Albany would have the final say over jobs, contracts and the direction of what would become a behemoth transportation agency, according to documents cited by Jameson W. Doig in his book "Empire on the Hudson," a history of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Now, 87 years after that first test of political will upon the autonomous agency, the … [Read more...] about Inside the N.Y.-N.J. From elderly recipients of heating assistance and Meals on Wheels to homeowners with flood insurance or a nearby Superfund site to commuters worried about the looming failure of a century-old train tunnel, deep cuts to federal programs proposed Thursday by President Donald Trump would be felt across New Jersey.Trump's budget director, Mick Mulvaney, said the cuts were needed to fund the military buildup and immigration crackdown – which also would be felt in the state – that the president promised voters in last year's election. The state could see more ozone warnings and less coastal protection because of cuts to environmental programs. And Rutgers University is concerned about research grants and student aid.But a call to increase funding for vouchers could benefit New Jersey's Catholic schools and yeshivas. And the budget plan – basically a 62-page outline with supporting details promised more than a month from now – also called for … [Read more...] about Trump budget plan has major ramifications in N.J.
