NASHVILLE - Their quarterback is struggling, a star player is complaining about the coaching, the defense is getting pushed around, they're coming off a bad loss and the NFC East is suddenly in danger of slipping away. Haven't the Giants been here before? In fact, they were in almost exactly this spot just two months ago when they flew back from Seattle and headed into their bye week as a wounded team that appeared to be on the brink of chaos. Back then, their season seemed to be one loss from coming to an unfortunate, premature end. Everything about the Giants' situation looked as bleak as could be. "And we came out of it," Eli Manning said this week. "And we started playing good football again. " Can they do the same thing the second time around? We will start to find out this afternoon when the fading Giants (6-4) take on the Titans (3-7) in what looks to be one of the last easily winnable games on the Giants' killer schedule. They need desperately to win against the … [Read more...] about PLAYBOOK. GIANTS at TITANS AT LP Field, 4 p.m. SINK OR SWIM. With Giants fading, it’s must-win time in Tenn.
MIAMI - Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer no longer has to worry about the possibility of "for sale" signs popping up on his front lawn or listen to angry talk-show callers speculating how many games he needs to win to keep his job. Knoxville can be tough when you go 5-6 and haven't beaten a Top 10 team since 2000. But the 23nd-ranked Vols wiped out all of last season's negative energy when they rolled to a 35-18 victory over ninth-ranked California at Neyland Stadium on Saturday in what had to be the most impressive victory by any team this weekend. "I think we felt disrespected and talked bad about since last year," quarterback Erik Ainge said. "We'd expect nothing else after going 5-6 at the University of Tennessee." Ainge, who suffered through a frustrating sophomore season in which he completed just 45.5% of his passes while platooning with Rick Clausen, looks like he has gotten back his confidence and passing touch. The junior from Hillsboro, Ore., completed 11 of 17 passes … [Read more...] about OPENER IS A PERFECT TENN. VOLS LOOK READY TO CONTEND AGAIN
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Chris Lofton wasn't the first option for Tennessee on what turned out to be the biggest shot of his life. "The first option was Andre (Patterson)," said Tennessee's Dane Bradshaw. But when Bradshaw couldn't get a clear look at the Vols' 6-7 senior on the inbounds, Plan B had Lofton's name written all over it. "I was able to get Chris on a curl," Bradshaw said. "Major Wingate (15 points) set him a pretty good screen and opened him up just enough." Just enough for Bradshaw to find Lofton deep in the right corner, with Winthrop's Torrell Martin practically in his hip pocket. But Lofton let fly over Martin's outstretched hand and when the shot found nothing but net with 0.4 seconds to play, No. 2 Tennessee had escaped what would have been a monumental upset at the hands of No. 15 Winthrop and come away with a 63-61 victory yesterday at the Greensboro Coliseum. Tennessee (22-7), which had dropped its previous four NCAA games to lower-seeded teams, will face … [Read more...] about LOFTON SHOT A PERFECT TENN.
WASHINGTON — U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on Wednesday ridiculed as "quite stunning" an open letter to Iran's leaders from 47 Senate Republicans warning that any nuclear deal needs their approval to stay in effect beyond 2016. "To write to the leaders in the middle of a negotiation and suggest that they're going to give a constitutional lesson is quite stunning," Kerry told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. "This letter ignores two centuries of precedent in the conduct of U.S foreign policy," added Kerry, who is leading tense bargaining with Iran over its nuclear program. Kerry was interrupted by Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.), the panel chairman, who said the secretary of state had been "making a speech" for more than five minutes during a question-and-answer session that had to move on. Later, Sen. James Risch (R-Idaho) labeled as "nonsense" what he called "the indignation and … [Read more...] about Republicans’ letter to Iran ‘ignores 2 centuries of precedent in the conduct of U.S. foreign policy’: John Kerry
Promos for WCBS/ Ch. 2's early morning newscast promise more news, more weather, more traffic reports and half the commercials. What they don't pitch, but what you also get, is more people on screen at a time than any other newscast in town can muster. And that's not a good thing. There are so many people on the air at some points that it looks more like "The McLaughlin Group" than a newscast. Also, watch for any length of time, and it becomes clear that because there are so many people, there is no real focus and no on-air leader. Anchors Mario Bosquez, Shon Gables and Jim Ryan alternate reading news stories, so no one dominates. Factor in a weathercaster - either Dave Price or Audrey Puente - and traffic correspondent Vanessa Alfano, who often appear on air with all three anchors, and you've got a crew large enough to field a team for the Knicks. Ryan, who left WNYW/Ch. 5 with great fanfare last May and joined Ch. 2 a few months later, is the odd man out in this mix. He … [Read more...] about QUITE A CROWD AT CH. 2 NEWS . The man who co-authored two books with 2016 presidential candidate and self-styled social conservative Mike Huckabee has been accused of child molestation in two different lawsuits, a new bombshell report alleges. John Perry, a prominent conservative author who also penned a book with Alabama Supreme Court Justice Roy Moore, faces allegations that he molested two different girls under the age of 14, according to the suits, which were unearthed by Buzzfeed News. According to Buzzfeed, which cited Perry's divorce papers, Perry's ex-wife alleged that the conservative Christian author "admitted sexual abuse" of a minor when they were married. Perry neither denied or admitted guilt to the alleged act in the divorce proceedings, Buzzfeed reported, but a 2012 police investigation later concluded that the allegations "were sustained." A spokesperson for the Nashville, Tenn., police department told Buzzfeed that the "alleged sexual battery was reported to have occurred when the … [Read more...] about Mike Huckabee’s co-author on 2 books accused of child molestation in multiple lawsuits: report
A Tennessee sheriff has outed thousands of uninsured drivers, blasting their personal information on Facebook, in an attempt to get the "fugitives" to surrender. More than 2,500 law-breaking Memphis motorists, who have outstanding warrants for violating the state's proof of insurance law, are named in a document posted Tuesday on the Shelby County Sheriff's Office's Facebook page. Their full names, addresses and birth dates are also listed. “It’s more or less a modern day wanted poster," Sgt. Matthew Keaton, who is behind the massive disclosures, told the Daily News. "It's all public information." "I don’t want our street units out actively seeking these people. I want our street units out seeking felony crimes and major offenders," he added. "I’m hoping people recognize they have a warrant and turn themselves in." Drivers must carry a minimum auto liability policy, according to Tennessee law. … [Read more...] about Tenn. sheriff blasts thousands of uninsured drivers’ personal information on Facebook
He's not the guy you'd want to take home to mom. But one death row inmate — convicted of murdering three people, including his mother — appears to be looking for love and drugs in all the wrong places after posting an ad on a popular dating website. Stephen Hugueley's tattooed mug was recently unearthed on social media site Mocospace, showing the 47-year-old killer in photos taken from his Tennessee prison cell apparently with a smuggled smartphone, WSMV-TV reported. In addition to posing for photos and making nearly 80 online friends while locked inside Nashville's Riverbend Maximum Security Institution, the conniving jailbird appears soliciting for drugs and illegal contraband from the outside. "Would u like 2 earn an extra grand or so each week? NO SEX OR NUDITY INVOLVED. however it is ILLEGAL," read a post under his username "deathrowprisoner68." The post, since taken down, goes on to list … [Read more...] about Tenn. death row inmate appears on dating website thanks to smuggled cell phone
Congress reconvenes Monday after a two-week recess, and plunges immediately into a fierce debate over how to control Iran’s nuclear program. Lawmakers also will decide whether to confirm a new attorney general and whether to stabilize payments for Medicare treatments. Some things to know about issues facing Congress: ——— CONGRESS’ ROLE IN IRAN NUCLEAR DEAL Tuesday’s hot spot will be the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, which plans to take up a bill requiring President Barack Obama to give Congress a voice in any deal on Iran’s nuclear program. Committee Chairman Bob Corker, R-Tenn., says Congress must be allowed to review a final agreement and, if it chooses, bar the president from lifting certain economic sanctions against Iran. Obama has threatened to veto the bill. He says it would undermine his ability to negotiate the strongest possible pact. Obama hails the pending accord, saying it would keep Iran from developing a … [Read more...] about Iran nuke deal, Loretta Lynch confirmation on docket as Congress returns from 2-week break
