(The Conversation is an independent and nonprofit source of news, analysis and commentary from academic experts.) F. Todd Davidson, University of Texas at Austin and Michael E. Webber, University of Texas at Austin (THE CONVERSATION) Every day there’s more news about the inevitable arrival of autonomous vehicles. At the same time, more people are using ride-hailing and ride-sharing apps, and the percentage of teens getting their driver’s license continues to decline. Given these technologies and social changes, it’s worth asking: Should Americans stop owning cars? We’ve conducted an analysis of the all-in cost of car ownership, and we found that mobility services such as ride-hailing and ride-sharing apps – which few people today would consider their main mode of transportation – will likely provide a compelling economic option for a significant portion of Americans. In fact, if the full cost of ownership is accounted … [Read more...] about To Uber or not? Why car ownership may no longer be a good deal
BOISE, Idaho (AP) — As the buildup to the 2018 election begins to accelerate, Idaho's 30-year-old ethics laws are facing scrutiny as top candidates wrestle with how much of their finances they should disclose to voters. Idaho is one of just two states that don't require elected officeholders to disclose any of their personal financial information. This means the state's elected officials can weigh in on public matters without sharing whether their wallets might benefit from them. Overhauling the system has become just as elevated as other traditional talking points - such as health care, education and job creation - in the race for governor. With Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter announcing he won't seek a fourth term, the race is expected to be Idaho's most competitive of 2018. Political newcomer and GOP gubernatorial candidate Tommy Ahlquist recently released his economic assets to fulfill a campaign promise that he would disclose any potential conflicts of interests. The release wasn't … [Read more...] about Idaho candidates talk transparency in buildup to 2018
Dear Carolyn: My retired mother-in-law graciously provides day care for my two daughters while my wife and I work. With child care in our city being practically unaffordable, it's a huge help to us and beneficial for the children, we feel. But she exacts a toll for her efforts. Mainly in the form of constantly haranguing and lecturing my wife on her deficiencies as a mother -- i.e. doing anything differently than she did because she was obviously the perfect mother. Mainly we put up with it quietly, but the latest rant really bothers me. My wife and I wanted to celebrate our fifth anniversary and my mother-in-law basically told us it's selfish and self-centered to do anything as a couple, as your focus should be entirely on your kids. It took all my nerve not to shout at her that maybe that attitude is exactly why your relationship with your husband is terrible (they barely speak). My wife just wants to move on and not do date nights because of it. How can I explain to her and her … [Read more...] about Carolyn Hax: MIL exacts emotional toll for child care services
NEW YORK (AP) — In a classroom, an old man glides in pushing a walker, and none of the young faces turn. In the cafeteria, a white-haired woman eats across from a teenager, to no one's surprise. And walking to the school bus, students pass wheelchairs and oxygen tanks as nonchalantly as if they were backpacks and notebooks. The Hebrew Home at Riverdale, a nursing home on a picturesque stretch of the Hudson River in the Bronx, has gone beyond its calling as a house for the old, playing host to the young with an innovative public high school right within its walls. The students, all of whom have learning disabilities, get vocational training to prepare them for a job at the home or elsewhere, all in the peculiar setting of a school where the old far outnumber the young. "It's as though they have 840 grandparents keeping an eye on them every day," said Daniel Reingold, CEO of the Hebrew Home and the school's founder. Reingold started the program around 1995 to address a … [Read more...] about A nursing home’s high school teaches lessons on life

TALLADEGA, Ala. (AP) — Parker Kligerman won the Truck Series race at Talladega Superspeedway, where the focus was on John Hunter Nemechek's desperate push to advance in the playoffs. Nemechek entered Saturday's elimination race last in the eight-driver field, but could advance into NASCAR's Round of 6 with some help. He got it very early in the race when Chase Briscoe headed to the garage with a mechanical problem, then Kaz Grala wrecked. But Nemechek was involved in his own accident and Briscoe got back on track. His wounded truck was wrapped tightly in tape, and Nemechek seemed to barely be hanging on as he dodged and weaved several accidents to grab a hard-earned sixth-place finish. It gave him the final spot in the playoffs. "I never thought we would have finished sixth after the day we had," Nemechek said. Kligerman won his second career Truck Series race, both at Talladega. This was just his seventh race of the year. Kligerman has … [Read more...] about Kligerman wins Talladega as Nemechek advances in playoffs
