HomeAid Houston and Lennar/Village Builders are teaming up to construct an 8,100-square-foot cottage for eight children from families in crisis on the Boys and Girls Country campus in Hockley. To help celebrate the framing stage of this new home, the team from Lennar/Village Builders came together at the site to write words of encouragement and blessing on the frame of the house, before it is covered with drywall. This was also an opportunity for the boys who will be moving into the house, along with their teaching parents, to walk through and experience the early stages of construction, and to write their own messages of hope and inspiration. "Our team is grateful HomeAid gave us this opportunity to provide a new and enhanced cottage for these wonderful boys," said Cindy Hinson, director of community affairs for Lennar/Village Builders. "This day's event allowed us to express our joy of giving through written messages which will continue to inspire the boys as they visit … [Read more...] about HomeAid Project receives gift of words at Boys and Girls Country
The Norton boys' track team held a 4½-point lead over No. 1 seed Northampton heading into the final race of the MIAA Division 4 indoor championships Saturday at the Reggie Lewis Center: the 4 x 400-meter relay. "We had a really weird situation where Norton had to get fourth and we had to get first so we kind of told them to run their hearts out and not worry about anything else," Northampton coach Angus Fisher said. "We just told them to run as fast as they could and it would all work out." Advertisement The Blue Devils' 4 x 400 squad of seniors Arlo Siegel and Avery Nortonsmith, junior Ian Shaw, and sophomore Nick Smith cruised to victory in 3 minutes 26.24 seconds, breaking the meet record of 3:27.40 set by Westwood in 1991. Speaking from the dais of the Enon Tabernacle West Baptist Church in Germantown one evening last month, Lisabeth Marziello painted a picture of rec center heaven. An executive for Philadelphia's Boys and Girls Clubs, she wants to replace the organization's century-old building on West Penn Street with a deluxe new facility equal to anything in the suburbs, complete with basketball courts, computer labs, and an indoor ice rink. Listeners were told that any student who sticks with the club's hockey program through all four years of high school would receive a full college scholarship. The crowd applauded enthusiastically. And why not? Marziello's plan would be a dream come true for Germantown, a diverse neighborhood of elegant Victorian houses that also struggles with population loss, poverty, and blight. The problem is, the facility remains just that -- a dream. Two years have now passed since Marziello laid out her vision for a campus-size Boys and Girls Club at a news conference … [Read more...] about Why raze a century-old Germantown Boys and Girls Club?
Madison La Follette senior Finn Gessner has numerous individual victories during his prep track and field career. But Tuesday night, Gessner wasn't concentrating on the clock; he was focused on turning wins into team points at his final Madison City Outdoor meet at Mansfield Stadium. "I was doing what I could to get 10 points," Gessner said after winning the boys 1,600-meter run. "It's more about the team this year. I think we have an opportunity to do some good things as a team this year." Gessner won in 4 minutes, 19.39 seconds, finishing ahead of Madison West's Noah Zamzow-Schmidt and Aaron Letcher. Gessner, a University of Wisconsin commit, later claimed the 800 in 1:57.35, just ahead of Madison West junior Daniel Jacobs, who finished in 1:57.67. From the time they are born, we put our boys in blue beanies and our girls in pink ones. It's a societal norm, an expectation even, that you just are what you are born - a boy or a girl. From early on, we divide toys and activities by very distinct gender lines, with superheroes and trucks and muck on one side and princesses and dolls and all things frilly on the other. Many children land, enthusiastically, on the expected side. Others dabble in both "girl" and "boy" things. But what if your kid, even from an early age, mostly showed interest in doing opposite-gender things? More importantly, what if they wanted to be the opposite gender - or a less-defined mix of both? And what if they wanted to test those limits in public places, like school? Would you let them? … [Read more...] about Boy or girl? Gender a new challenge for schools
Just as they entered Monday's Lancaster-Lebanon League Section Three meet tied atop the division standings, the Donegal and Annville-Cleona boys found themselves in a neck-and-neck race through the first 300 meters of the 4x100-meter relay in Mount Joy. But as the crowd assembled on the bleachers of Donegal's new athletic facility roared to a crescendo under the gray sky, the Indians' Avery Walker gained a step for the anchor leg with a clean exchange from Cael Rapp and held off the Little Dutchmen's Griffin Hertz, finishing at 45.5 seconds and helping the home team pull away toward a 118-32 victory. "I knew I had a really good push," Walker said. "i was just using my form and everything my coach taught me. I heard him coming, but I just kept pushing." While the Donegal boys (5-0) pulled one step further on their quest for their first section title, the Indians' girls took another step toward a third consecutive Section Three crown with a 108-41 win over Annville-Cleona in another … [Read more...] about Donegal boys and girls sweep Annville-Cleona in pivotal L-L League Section 3 track and field dual meet
Samuel L. Jackson is serious about his love for Boy Meets World. Appearing on NBC's The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Tuesday, the star of Captain America: The Winter Soldier performed a slam poem about the '90s TV show starring Ben Savage, Danielle Fishel and Rider Strong. Its sequel, Girl Meets World, reunites the cast and is set to debut sometime in 2014. It's not known why the 65-year-old decided to pay tribute to the modern classic—but does it matter? After taking a puff from a cigarette, Jackson delivered a dramatic homage to the family-friendly series. "Boy meets world. Boy greets world. Hello, world! I am Cory Matthews: short and average, head full of curls. The year: 1993. We see two boys who lack both brains and brawn: Cory Matthews and Hunter, or Hunter comma Shawn. Hair parted down the middle, jacket made of leather, alas one man's trailer trash is another man's treasure. Boy meets world. Boy meets girl. Topanga, Topanga, Topanga, beats the heart of Cory, a story … [Read more...] about Samuel L. Jackson Performs Boy Meets World Slam Poem on The Tonight Show—Watch Now!
